CA Contractor Benchmarks 2026
LinkedIn Post
Most California contractors have no idea how their margins compare to the top 25% in their trade.
Here’s the 2026 reality check:
Electricians doing residential service work are hitting 60%+ gross margins. The ones chasing commercial bids? 25–32%. Same license. Completely different take-home.
Plumbers running flat-rate service calls are at 60–68% gross. New construction? 15–28%. The top operators are taking home 20–35% net. The average is 2–8%.
HVAC contractors with emergency and after-hours service agreements are generating 65–80% gross margins — the highest of any trade. But the average small HVAC company still nets just 5–7%.
The difference isn’t the market. It’s the job mix. It’s monthly financials instead of scrambling at tax time. It’s knowing your numbers well enough to protect your margin.
If you’re a CA contractor doing over $500K and you want to see exactly where you stand, book a free 15-min call below. Spots are limited.
