US Taxpayers Abroad Filing Deadline

🌍U.S. Taxpayers Abroad: Your 2024 Federal Filing Deadline Is June 16, 2025
If you’re a U.S. citizen or resident alien living and working abroad (including military service members), mark your calendar—Monday, June 16, 2025, is your federal income tax filing deadline for 2024. This two-month automatic extension from the standard April 15 deadline reflects that June 15 falls on a Sunday.
📌 Who qualifies?
You’re eligible if either of these applies:
• You live outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico and your primary business or post of duty is also outside.
• You’re in military or naval service stationed abroad.
Just attach a statement to your return specifying your eligibility.
📌 Need more time?
You can request a filing extension to October 15, 2025—but remember, this is an extension to file, not to pay. Interest still accrues on taxes unpaid after April 15, 2025.
🌐 Important Reporting Requirements
• Foreign Earned Income Exclusion & Foreign Tax Credit: File to claim benefits (see Publication 54).
• Foreign Bank Accounts (FBAR): Must be reported if the combined value exceeded $10,000 in 2024. Due April 15, with an automatic extension to Oct. 15.
• Form 8938: Report specified foreign financial assets if thresholds are met.
• All amounts must be reported in U.S. dollars, using Dec. 31 exchange rates.
